NARM & Working with Teenagers: Adolescence as Emerging Adulthood

Mike Giresi, CAC, CTP, ICADC, RYT, NARM Practitioner
hosted by Brad Kammer, LMFT, LPCC, NARM Training Director and Senior Faculty

This introductory webinar uses the NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM) to present an overview into one of the most misunderstood and challenging developmental stages for helping professionals, educators and parents: adolescence.  The intention of this webinar is to provide a heartful exploration of a population that has historically been characterized by misunderstanding, stigmatization, and fear.  Utilizing NARM Organizing Principles, we will examine the various challenges and opportunities facing adolescents and those who wish to support their healing and growth.

In the field of adolescent treatment, behavior modification approaches have dominated the landscape.  This makes sense due to the problematic behaviors seen in so many teenagers, including volatile reactions toward parents and siblings, educational troubles, substance abuse, problematic gaming, acting out through eating, sex and violence, and other self-harming behaviors.  However, with our current understanding of the long-term impact of ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and Complex Trauma (C-PTSD), we are beginning to understand how these life-interfering symptoms and behaviors are being driven from unacknowledged and unresolved trauma.  A new perspective of supporting emerging adult consciousness is needed.

The NeuroAffective Relational Model provides a comprehensive psycholobiologically-oriented approach to working with adolescents by looking beneath the surface and supporting shifts in patterns of distorted identity and nervous system dysregulation that are often at the root of adolescent turmoil.  NARM provides a refreshing new approach to addressing the struggles adolescents face and providing more attuned support and effective treatment.
